Welcome To

The “Inner Game” of PKD Blog

You have Polycystic Kidney Disease and this disease has subjected you to many challenges. Your medical challenges are, of course, your top priority. Hopefully, you and your medical team are dealing with these challenges as best as possible.

Yet, beyond the purely medical challenges, you also face challenges that your medical team isn’t equipped to address, such as the following:

  • You go through life with a sense that you’re “defective” and “different.”
  • You feel isolated because others can’t understand and appreciate what you’re going through.
  • You feel “disconnected” and “frustrated” because you have no one to express your feeling to.
  • You feel apart from, instead of a part of, the “mainstream.”
  • You often feel “discouraged” because carrying the “weight” of your disease saps your energy, and you see your “future” as foggy, at best.

All these feelings you have are perfectly understandable.

I know. I’ve been there.

Having traveled the PKD Odyssey for 48 years, I have experienced these feelings myself.

I also know that you don’t have to stay stuck in that place of discouragement and inner isolation.

A better life is possible for you.

The intention of this blog is to share my experiences, observations, and methods to assist the reader to obtain a better life, whatever that may mean for you.

Some of the obstacles facing PKD patients that will be discussed include:

  • How your physical symptoms and/or medications are affecting your daily activities.
  • How and to what degree dialysis is impacting your quality of life, if applicable.
  • How you are experiencing your relationships with family, friends, and co-workers.
  • How you feel about yourself and your body.

As we discuss these and similar subjects, it is my hope that many of these obstacles will seem smaller to you and will be easier to overcome.

In this way, your PKD “burden” will be lighter, and the lighter your burden, the more strength you will have to live the best life you can!

Now, although having PKD clearly affects your whole life, you are still very human, with human desires, dreams, yearnings, and longings!

Accordingly, this blog will also discuss general aspects of the human condition to which PKD patients are not immune!!!

We will discuss goal-setting and developing desired outcomes which are appropriate for you, that are within your capabilities to achieve, and that will provide satisfaction and fulfillment.

We will discuss your inner resources, your talents, skills, inclinations, and how they may be utilized to achieve your desired outcomes.

Above all, we will discuss how to develop and maintain a optimistic, forward-looking mindset to keep moving along the PKD Odyssey with enthusiasm and positive expectation.

So, welcome to my blog! It will be an exciting journey!

And join in the discussion!
